The cooling system is the one people forget until the temperature gauge climbs on the Hanlon in August. Coolant loses its corrosion protection over time; hoses harden; water pumps weep; plastic radiator tanks crack; thermostats stick. Any of those leads to overheating, and overheating leads to warped heads and blown head gaskets. A coolant flush on the manufacturer's interval and a hose-and-leak check at every oil change prevent nearly all of it.

Warning signs
