A Safety Standards Certificate (SSC) is the provincial inspection that confirms a vehicle meets Ontario's minimum safety standard on the day it's inspected. You need one to register a used vehicle in a new owner's name, to register a vehicle brought in from another province or country, to put a rebuilt vehicle on the road, or to change a vehicle's status from unfit to fit. It's valid for 36 days from the inspection date, and it is not a warranty — it says the car was safe to drive that day, not that nothing will break next month.
What the inspection covers
The technician works through the provincial checklist: brakes (pad and rotor thickness, lines, hoses, parking brake), tires and wheels (tread depth, damage, matching sizes), steering and suspension (ball joints, tie rods, shocks, bushings), lights and signals, windshield and wipers, mirrors, horn, seatbelts, exhaust (leaks, mounts), fuel system, body and frame condition, and the drivetrain. Anything that doesn't meet the standard is written up as a fail item with the specific reason.
If it fails
You pay for the inspection either way. We give you an itemized quote for each failed item. If you have the repairs done here, we re-inspect at a reduced fee. Selling a car privately
Sellers often get the certificate ahead of listing so buyers can't use it as a bargaining chip. Just remember the 36-day clock: if the sale takes longer than that, it has to be redone.

Often, for small items like a bulb, a wiper or a tire. Brake or suspension work usually means a second visit for parts.
